#tooltuesday : potato peeler

potato peelers

potato peelers

The other day a parent mentioned her child asking to use a potato peeler to help make dinner. Initial thoughts, “A potato peeler???what?!” Mom’s response, “Well you’ve used it at school, so why not?”

Kitchen tools can be scary when first introducing them to your kids.  There’s this thing that kids do, LEARN!

Here’s some ways you can introduce a potato peeler,

-talk about tools and how tools are not toys. just like a hammer or saw, tools of the kitchen are not to be played with. they have a specific way to be used.

-while holding the potato peeler, show and tell them where it is sharp. tap your finger gently on the blade part to show them where the sharp part is. then let them hold it and tap it so they understand.

-show them how to hold the vegetable and slide away from them. “Start by your fingers and press away from you.”

-remind them to take their time. “It’s ok to go slow.  I want you to be safe.”

-reaffirm them as they work. instead of just “good job” try,

“Look at those ribbons you are making.”

“I like that you are being safe and taking your time.”

“I can’t wait to taste the food you made.”

Talking to children enhances the experiences that they have.  Building trust with children creates stronger bonds and mutual trust. And sometimes accidents happen, but help prepare them by talking about what the plan is and what could happen. Tools don’t have to be scary!

“Practice makes perfect!” Not always perfect, but usually better. So keep practicing!
